The two heroes sit with him, listening.
They don’t notice the striking eyes watching from the shadows.
Marley is awake.
Her hand curled tight, ready to strike.
But the words stop her.
Confuse her.
Move her.
Instead, she slips silently away into the night.
When Penelope and Pepe return to her room, they find only an empty bed.
On it, a note scratched in sharp handwriting:
“You’re lucky I’m tired today.”
No footprints.
No trail.
But Marley is never gone for long.
